Why Botox?

Botulinum toxin A or “Botox” as it is commonly called blocks signals from nerves to muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract as it is paralyzed by the toxin, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines which are “dynamic” in nature; meaning they result from muscle activity.  Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox.

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA), also called botulinum toxin type A, is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. While botulism can be a fatal disease, harvesting tiny amounts of the purified Botulinum toxin can be useful in medical treatment.  Botulinum toxin is used to treat many medical conditions including some bowel and bladder disorders, migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasm including cervical dystonia (severe spasms in the neck muscles).  Botox is more than just a cosmetic therapy.

Botox is an FDA approved therapy requiring no down time.  It is minimally invasive and has been used extensively for many years with an excellent safety profile.  It is a proven therapy and is quickly administered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a Botox procedure done?
Getting Botox takes only a few minutes and does not require any analgesia.  A very fine needle is used to inject the purified and sterile toxin into specific muscles to achieve desired effect.  Minimal discomfort is experienced in the hands of a skilled Practitioner.  Full effect of the procedure generally takes 7-14 days but initial benefit can start within 48 hours after the injection.
How long does a Botox injection last?
The effects from Botox injection will last 3-6 months.  As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles improved/eliminated by the therapy begin to reappear and will need to be treated again.  With time and repeated therapy, the lines and wrinkles will appear less severe as the muscles shrink due to repeated paralysis and disuse.
What are the side effects of Botox?
Temporary bruising at the site of injection is the most common side effect. This is minimized through skilled administration and the avoidance of blood thinning agents including aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and naproxen in the 2 weeks preceding treatment.  A small percentage of patients may experience unwanted muscle paralysis in regions other than those being treated due to migration of the toxin or poor placement of the injected chemical. This can include eyelid drooping.  This is self- limited and usually resolves within 2-3 weeks.  It is most important that the areas injected not be rubbed for at least 12 hours after the injection to minimize spread of toxin to unwanted areas.  After treatment, it is advisable to rest and lie down for 3-4 hours.
Who should NOT receive Botox injections?
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Botox.  Individuals with any neuromuscular impairment should only be treated for cosmetic purposes after assessment by a Medical Provider.  Since Botox is not effective for all wrinkles in all circumstances, the medical assessment is very important to ascertain if you are the right person to receive treatment and achieve desired results.  Botox should not be administered in those individuals with known allergies or sensitivities to the toxin, skin infection or irritation in the area to be treated or previous adverse reaction to treatment.  Those individuals who have had facial surgery should be evaluated on an individual basis to see if they are appropriate candidates for Botox therapy.
Will health insurance pay for Botox?
Botox employed for cosmetic purposes is not deemed a health necessity and thus becomes an elective procedure not reimbursed by health insuranceBotox employed for medical therapy can be covered by insurance under certain conditions.
How much does Botox cost?
Prices for Botox vary widely depending upon Provider and region.   The administration of Botox can be accomplished relatively quickly but should only be undertaken after a full consultation with a Medical Provider including goals of therapy, full health history and discussion of expectations of treatment.  Botox is effective if employed appropriately.  It is not a miracle drug and is not without potential side effect.  Used by a skilled provider- a “medical artist and sculptor” –  Botox can help achieve reduction in undesirable facial wrinkles and contour irregularities.  The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Botox Cosmetic for specific applications including forehead lines, “crow’s feet” and frown lines between the eyes in adults.  These conditions may be treated simultaneously within safe maximum dosage guidelines.

Maximum effect of smoothing the skin and facial rejuvenation is achieved when Botox is used in combination with cosmetic acupuncture.  The results are both more effective as well as longer lasting making it a cost- effective undertaking for those individuals who receive Botox at regular intervals.

What brand of Botox is best?
Wellness on Third uses Botox Cosmetic as its only formulation of botulinum toxin for injection.  There are 2 other products available for cosmetic use but Botox Cosmetic has the greatest presence on the market and therefore the greatest experience and knowledge exists.  The track record of this therapy in the hands of knowledgeable Providers is well known.  It is desirable to maintain use of the same formulation of toxin in sequential treatments and avoid bouncing from product to product.  Unfortunately, the expense often drives people to seek out the “best deal” and this may involve different products dependent upon sale pricing currently in place.  Botox Cosmetic maintains consistent pricing and does not run sales to entice providers to change product.  It is established and sound and therefore we, at Wellness on Third, feel confident in its use, safety and quality.  Typical costs of Botox are determined by “unit” of toxin.  Maximum quantities used in a single treatment would be 40 units for a female face and up to 50 units for a male face.  These numbers represent safe upper limits to single therapy.  The skilled Provider will use the least amount of drug necessary to achieve the desired results.  In conjunction with cosmetic acupuncture, better and longer lasting results may be possible in a more cost- effective way.  At current physician cost of product, the injected charge is $ 11.00 per unit; regionally, prices commonly seen are $12.00 to $16.00 per unit.  Mathematically this could represent charges for a single treatment using maximum dosing of $440.00 for females and $550.00 for males.

Allergan, the producer of Botox Cosmetic has a program called “Brilliant Distinction” which recognizes brand loyalty and rewards clients for use of product.  This is helpful, in terms of cost saving and provision of incentives for those receiving Botox Cosmetic therapy.

We strongly recommend that you speak to Dr. Runciman about complementary use of cosmetic acupuncture and facial rejuvenation which would reduce overall costs for cosmetic therapy by decreasing amounts and frequency of Botox necessary and producing more sustained results.

We desire to support your cosmetic goals in the most effective way both therapeutically and monetarily.  We want satisfied clients.  Your trust is well placed with Wellness on Third.  Allow us to prove this to you.
